Steam Returns to the Catskills Aug. 8 and 9

Steam Returns to the Catskills Aug. 8 and 9

Steam locomotives were the technology that helped build America’s railroads. The Catskill Mountain Railroad is proud to host steam locomotive Viscose No. 6 in Mt. Tremper, N.Y., on August 8 and 9, 2015. Viscose No. 6 will be pulling the Esopus Scenic Train on Saturday and Sunday, departing from Mt. Tremper every hour from 10:00 am to 5:00 p.m. This will be the first time a steam locomotive has operated on these rails since the New York Central Railroad converted the Catskill Mountain Branch to diesel operation in 1949!

This steam locomotive was built by Baldwin in 1924 for the American Viscose Co. of Roanoke, Virginia. In the 1960s it was sold to Gem City Iron & Metal in Pulaski, Virginia. Scott Symans of Dunkirk, N.Y., purchased the locomotive in 2004 and restored it to operating condition in 2007. Because of its small size, it can be trucked anywhere in the country to operate on any railroad. The Catskill Mountain Railroad is excited to provide this unique experience to a new generation of train riders who have never seen an operating steam locomotive!
